In this 4-week class, we will read the novel Holes, by Louis Sachar, using the platform "Actively Learn," which makes the text interactive for students! Within the text, students will find annotations providing explanations and context, videos and links to other websites that do the same, as well as multiple choice and short answer questions that students will need to answer to continue reading. (Students are welcome to revise their answers with teacher approval.) Once students have answered...
Students will read the novel and develop an understanding of its meaning and message. We will cover many of the standard literary elements, devices, and strategies used by Sachar which makes Holes so popular with readers of all ages.
Students will be asked to read ~1/3rd of Holes each week prior to weeks 2, 3, and 4 respectively. Each chapter within the novel will have a number of short answer and/or multiple-choice questions students will need to answer in order to continue reading.
The price of this class includes a 1-time rental fee (2 months) for the novel on the Actively Learn platform of $3.50.
Students will receive standard rubric feedback on their Actively Learn responses and occasional written feedback. Students will also participate in discussions in class and receive verbal feedback from me and their classmates.
