Class Experience
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parental Warning: students will be discussing the historical marriage of Poe to his cousin, who was a minor. We will discuss first how this was a different era and such marriages were more acceptable. Discussions of mental illness, alcohol abuse and death will also occur. This will be framed in a historical narrative of the struggles that Poe encountered in his life. We will discuss actions Poe could have taken today in order to better his life instead of turning to alcohol. We will also discuss the availability of supports for mental illness today versus the lack of those resources in the early 1800s. As this involves sensitive topics, students will first be given guidelines on discussing these topics in a constructive, historical context. They will be asked to refrain from negative comments, be polite when others are talking, and actively listen. Any negative comment will result in the student being muted from the class, and should it continue students will be removed and outschool will be notified.
Information from Poe's life was gathered from Poemuseum.org. Stories and poems were collected from poestories.com
