In this class, we will discuss the characters and plot in the book "Have Fun Anna Hibiscus" by Atinuke. We will also ask questions and do activities that help connect this book to our own lives. These conversations and activities will help us interact with the story and enjoy it more. At the end of class, we will test our comprehension of the book by playing a quiz game. The class will help us improve our listening and reading comprehension skills. Schedule: Note**There are only five classes in this course. Before Class: The learners must read or have a portion of the book read to them before each of the first four classes. This includes reading the first chapter before the first class meeting begins. Here is the schedule, but I will remind you before each class. BEFORE the: FIRST class (June 14): Read pages 1-27 Second class (June 16) Read pages 27-55 Third class (June 18) Read pages 55-71 Fourth class (June 21) Read pages 71-111 Fifth class (June 23) review the story to prep for the quiz game (The class is celebratory and may include bringing our favorite food or toy to class. After the short review game, we will draw more pictures and play some drawing and word games.) During class: To begin each class, we will discuss the book using questions like [Did you like the book?] [Why?] [What was your favorite part?]. Then we will get more specific and ask questions regarding the plot and setting; to demonstrate general comprehension. We will also practice predicting future events in the story. We will discuss how we feel about the events in the story and put ourselves into the character’s shoes. We might use questions like [Have you ever helped others who don't have as much as you do?] [Do you ever travel to other places?]. [Do you ever get blamed for others' mistakes?]. We will discuss the book for about 15 minutes and then we will work on the day's activity/drawing. There are multiple activities for each day. We will do as many activities as we have time for according to the student's preference. The activities are scheduled below, but I will remind you of the drawing topic and supplies you will need before each class. Activity Schedule: First class (July 26): Anna says goodbye to her family and gets on the airplane to travel to Canada. Activity 1: Illustrate and discuss your favorite trip or a dream trip. Activity 2: Learner choice (Often the children have great ideas for drawings related to the book) Second class (July 28): Anna looks at pictures of her extended Canadian relatives and learns to wear warm clothes Activity 1: Illustrate Anna's experience or an experience you had regarding learning something new. Activity 2: Make a family tree Activity 3: Learner Choice (Often the children have great ideas for drawings related to the book) Third class (July 30): Anna learns how a dog can help keep one safe. She also meets neighbors and learns winter sports. Activity 1: Illustrate a time when you learned something new. Activity 2: Discuss a time when someone misunderstood or judged you before getting to know you. Activity 3: Learner Choice (Often the children have great ideas for drawings related to the book) Fourth class (August 2): Anna meets a new friend that is going to Africa Activity 1: Illustrate a time when you helped a friend. Activity 2: Learner Choice (Often the children have great ideas for drawings related to the book) Fifth class (August 4): Play the quiz game and draw a picture of the learner's favorite scene. We also may have a show and tell of our favorite thing and eat our favorite food. Quiz game: The quiz game will test our comprehension of the story. There will be some easier questions that test direct comprehension of the story events. There will also be more challenging questions that require the learner to know and connect story events. *Dates and assignments may change depending on the class and the students. Requirements: The students need to read or have the daily portion of the book read to them BEFORE CLASS. If they are unable to read or hear the book before class, they may not be able to participate well in the discussion part of the class. Teaching Style: The class will center around discussing the contents of the book and completing drawings that help relate the book to our personal life. I will give prompts and remind them of story events, but my classes lean heavily on student participation. The class will be about 50% discussion and 50% drawing. There may be long periods of quiet so that students can focus on their drawings. However, I will not hesitate to ask to see their progress. I will also ask them questions to assist them in staying focused.

Other Details
Parental Guidance
This book is about a girl that lives in Africa. It discusses some things about African culture and this family’s belief system. It also gives an example of children that are not of the same socio-economic status as the main character. Some parts of town do not look the same as Anna's home. Such stories are used to show that despite our differences there are ways to be kind to and think of others. Our class focus is not to discuss the aspects of different cultures, but to practice reading comprehension, including relating story events to ourselves. If questions come up about facts not addressed in the story, the student will be encouraged to research these interests with their parents. I will also research any questions that arise. As in all my classes, each child and their perspective will be included and encouraged. In addition, I always suggest that parents approve and discuss any books that their children read.
Note: This particular book in the series addresses different stereotypes that each culture has about the other. Anna and her friends find out that the place where one lives and the concepts stereotypes they hold may not be true and can be overcome.
