Class Experience

I'm so happy to to share my love of art and anime with new and exciting people!
In this two part class, I will share with learners a very popular style of Japanese art Shonen Manga and Anime. Shonen is a manga and anime genre that typically contains action, comedy, friendship, and sometimes tragedy. This style has a huge fanbase and many beloved characters that we will look at and discuss during the class. We will be looking at their art styles and how we can recreate them in our own drawings.

We will begin the first class with an overview of what Shonen art is and what makes it unique. We will look at various examples within the Shonen style and discover what makes them unique and similar in their own ways. During the course of our walk through the genre, we will observe some of the humble beginnings of the Shonen style such as Astro Boy and explore through to the more recent creations. During this course we will also begin our own drawings based on the style depicted. During the drawing portion of the class, some music will be played to hopefully inspire the students in their creative endeavors. The theme will be to select a Shonen Manga/Anime that the student likes and create their own character using the style from their chosen manga/anime. In the drawing the student should give a reference to the subject of their style. Examples will be given in class.

In the second class, we will review our drawings and receive feedback. We will view the completed drawings and the style used and determine if it truly encompasses the style. We will also learn the benefits of Critique in art and how it can be used to benefit the artist. We will then critique one another's work to help improve upon the work created. This will be a friendly environment for artists to grow and learn.

This class is designed to teach a very popular and interesting style to students who love anime and manga. During the class I will present slides, videos, and images of the various Shonen styles to the students in order to give examples of the genre. We will build an understanding of the artistic styles of the artists and determine what each student wants to create for their own original character. This is designed to not only allow the student to draw their favorite character, but also step into the style of the artist and learn from them to improve their art. This could also be a way for a student to learn an entirely new anime/manga and artistic style.

Hi! I am Teacher Lexi! I am a Visual Artist, meaning I work in most Visual Artistic Mediums. I am also a Gamer, but we will focus first on Art.
I have had a love for Art for as long as I can remember and would Love to share that enthusiasm with you and your learners.
I have a Bachelor of Science with a focus on Art Education and have been enrolled in art classes since grade school. I have also attended local classes held by a Marvel Comics illustrator who has given tips on how to work in the professional illustration field.
When it comes to why I believe art is important, it’s very simple, art gives people a voice. Everyone has their own style, just like everyone has a unique voice. I enjoy helping students speak volumes through their artistic creations and develop their style. I want to be the support behind the next great artists, and I know that can be anyone and everyone, if they find the right tools and have that fire and drive!
I am also a gaming enthusiast who is happy to share a wealth of knowledge and experience. Gaming since I was little, I have learned and grown through a variety of media and subject matter. Gaming is a great avenue for learning problem solving skills, multitasking, critical thinking, and social skills, among a great many more. Pokémon was a wonderful teacher for reading skills growing up and Dungeons and Dragons builds Social Skills for all levels.
Not only am I an art and gaming enthusiast, but also cats! You may find every now and then my Five (yes, I said Five) furry children decide to come and visit with me during classes, and I hope you will love them as much as I do. Who knows, they could be the stars and models of my next class!
