Assessment
This class is designed to gain confidence in sketching and construction. While perfection is not the aim, I can provide feedback on technical foundations. I always ask at the end of class if learners would like to share any work. Sharing is not mandatory, however, I am unable to assist and give meaningful feedback if they choose not to share. I approach feedback with younger audiences gently, focusing more on where learners are striving. My goal for assessment is for learners to feel inspired and to continue their pieces. I may offer gentle suggestions for improvement when requested, usually picking out one area for them to finesse.

All skill levels are welcome in this ongoing class where students will practice a range of different subjects to strengthen their sketching skills; lessons will prioritize an anime and cartooning style. This class is nurturing and relaxed so that you can build confidence to draw anime with ease. An excellent extra-curricular option for enrichment.

This class includes a mix of tutorial, step-by-step, and prompt-based drawing. I am here to guide artistic discoveries and help you figure out which methods and styles work for you. This course values experimenting with process over achieving perfection. I strive to give multiple references and allow learners to approach pieces at their own pace if that is what they wish to do. Therefore, my approach to this class is relaxed and flexible. This class tends to be focused. If your learner likes to socialize as they draw, I would recommend my social drawing classes.

We will spend our time practising and repeating foundational shapes so that we feel more comfortable approaching a larger piece of art; as we are sketching ideas, it might be that we do not finish a complete work during class. Learners are welcome to line, render, and color outside of class time. Furthermore, we will explore more than human anatomy; we may draw popular objects in anime such as food, clothing, animals, swords, backgrounds and more.

I will be using Procreate but you may join this class either with a digital medium or with pencil and paper.

This class is in an ongoing/subscription-based format; learners may join or withdraw on any given week. The lessons do not build on each other, which means that some key ideas may be repeated. This class is designed to encourage regular practice in an engaging setting.

• Learners who are not verified and do not connect to a webcam will be put into the waiting room until they are able to reconnect to the meeting with a working camera. If I am unable to verify a learner during the class time, I will follow-up with both the adult who registered the learner and Outschool's Trust and Safety Team.
• If a class is full, I may review “mute”, “unmute”, and “raise hand” options for effective classroom communication
• I may call on learners and help facilitate conversation; I ask that only one person speak at a time.
• Learners may use the “chat” feature to communicate
• If learners are not able to use the "chat" feature in a respectful way (ie. they spamming the chat or being inappropriate), the chat may be set so that learners are only able to speak with the instructor.
• If a learner is unable to adhere to these guidelines or is being disrespectful, they will be given up to two warnings. If a learner continues with disrespectful behaviour they may be put into the waiting room or be asked to leave; they can follow the rest of the class through the recording posted in the classroom.
Learning Goals
Learners will combine foundational drawing skills with experimenting to develop their own style. This combination will allow learners to feel they are developing technical skills while feel free to artistically express themselves.
Regular studies of full-body people to increase confidence in construction and building pace; these studies are designed to decrease time spent on perfectionism while striving to add dynamic poses and flow to their toolkit.

Hello!

I'd like to thank-you for taking a moment to learn more about me.

My name is Rae and I have been a full-time instructor on Outschool since 2021. I am passionate about arts, media, technology, learning, and the way that they correlate with each other. I offer drawing classes and social clubs based on special interests.

I received my BA in Theatre and English from the University of the Fraser Valley. During my time there, I directed and performed in a number of stage productions including: Once in a Lifetime by Moss Hart; Arabian Nights by Mary Zimmerman; and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Theatre is an important aspect of my life: it has taught me to be confident, how to collaborate with others, and how to manage multiple projects with close deadlines. These are transferable life skills that have helped in every aspect of my life.

My approach is encouragement and reciprocal curiosity. I take a genuine interest from the input of my students because they offer bright ideas and I firmly believe that we learn and grow from each other. I am happy to hear about the special interests that your learner is passionate about and want every child to feel celebrated for who they are. My classroom rules all revolve around the idea of safety: be kind to each other, yourself, and the space you are working in.

I like to spend my free time tending to my plants, cooking healthy food, and playing video games such as Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, and Final Fantasy.
