(Can We) Animate That? [Pitch Your Stories!]
Class experience
In this one-hour workshop class, students will get a chance to pitch story ideas (either before or during the class). We will discuss the best strategies for taking a story idea and turning it into an animated film using stop motion. We will explore the relationships between shots, sequences, scenes, and stories, as well as how to approach particularly difficult sequences to create the illusion of movement using stop motion techniques. At the end of the hour, students will be ready to take...
Students will learn the relationship between shot, sequence, scene, and story, and how these fit into planning a narrative film of any length. Students will learn how to articulate their story ideas into manageable animated film productions, as well as the difference between pre-production and production. Students will become aware of the concepts of storyboarding and shot lists to help organize their shots, sequences, and scenes.
I think stop motion is an excellent combination of the arts, science, math, and technology. As an art form, it is accessible and approachable to anyone, regardless of background knowledge. I have been making stop-motion animated films for nearly thirty years, starting at summer camp when I was a middle school student. I currently run The Wolfbird studios, a learning-focused animation and interactive media studio. The most recent stop motion animation, created in collaboration with a dance professor at a nearby university, is on the festival circuit and has already started winning awards: most recently Best Experimental Film at the Frostbite International Online Film Festival. My undergraduate and masters degrees are in multimedia production arts and science.
