Animals Through World Mythologies - Weekly Meetings
Class experience
Jump into the past and relive the steps of ancestors from every walk of life. In this class, we will focus on five different animals and the different renditions of those animals through Greek, Hindu, Norse, Egyptian, Aztec, and Celtic mythologies. We will discuss how these cultures have echoes in our modern day society and how we are still influenced by some of the ideas from these ancient civilizations. Students will be able to compare and contrast the mythological creatures, gods, and...
By the end of this course, students will have learned about many types of mythologies including Greek, Hindu, Norse, Egyptian, Aztec, Celtic and other honorable mentions. Students will have gained deeper insights into these mythologies and cultures through the creatures that resemble our animals today, and be able to make connections between themselves and these cultures.
I have spent 7 years studying various world mythologies via multiple facets; I have traveled all over the world, from Mexico's Chichén Itzá to the Greek Parthenon and many other places in between. I have taken university courses, sat in on lectures from historians and archaeologists, and researched both fact (scholarly articles / research papers) as well as modern day fiction built around the ideas found in myth and cultures from all corners of the globe. I continue to educate myself with modern research, literature and seminars whenever possible, all to further my interest in the stories I have studied from multiple cultures.
Handouts, worksheets and printouts will be provided when needed, though are not necessary to take this course. These help the students stay engaged during class or practice what was learned after class ends.
For sources, I am sourcing information from 7 years of study, both in the classroom and through on-the-ground research in various countries. Below is a list of novels, textbooks and classes that I have compiled from my education as well as my passion of studying mythology, from which a lot of my information for this course is pulled: - "Norse Mythology: A Captivating Guide to Norse Folklore Including Fairy Tales, Legends, Sagas and Myths of the Norse Gods and Heroes" by Matt Clayton - "Norse Mythology" by Neil Gaiman - "Mythology: Classic stories from the Greek, Celtic, Norse, Japanese, Hindu, Chinese, Mesopotamian and Egyptian Mythology" by Scott Lewis -"Aztec History: A Captivating Guide to the Aztec Empire, Mythology, and Civilization" published by Captivating History -"Classical Mythology" by Mark Morford, Robert J. Lenardon, and Michael Sham -"The Mythology Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained" published by DK -"Egyptian Mythology: A Concise Guide to the Ancient Gods and Beliefs of Egyptian Mythology" published by Hourly History -"Celtic Mythology: Captivating Celtic Myths of Celtic Gods, Goddesses, Heroes and Legendary Creatures" published by Captivating History - "Yoga Mythology: 64 Asanas and Their Stories" by Devdutt Pattanaik and Matthew Rulli - Eclectic university courses taken from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Colorado Boulder, Virginia International University, and MERLOT.
