Class Experience

This is an activity based class where students will be moving their bodies and learning about the many different ways that mindful movement can help us in life. I will begin by giving the students a short 5 minutes introduction about what yoga means and why people do it. I will talk about the importance of using yoga to move our bodies with intent and how that intent can help make both our bodies and our minds stronger. I will then lead the students through a series of yoga poses that are associated with different animals. I will be reading from a book titled, "A Yoga Parade of Animals" by Pauline Mainland. The book includes 13 poses and 13 animals that resemble each pose, allowing the students to have fun while being active and mindful! We will pay attention to our breathing patterns as well and I will prompt the students to participate in Hatha style yoga breathes throughout the lesson.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to complete 13 yoga exercises while following along with verbal prompts from me.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I used to use this book in my first grade classroom often. We would practice these poses at least a couple times a week. My students were able to memorize the poses after doing them so many times and really enjoyed this type of brain break. I have also been practicing yoga myself for over 10 years and have attended an hour long professional development course about how yoga can be useful in the classroom. I have also observed a number of teachers using yoga in their classrooms and collaborated with them about how to do this as effectively and safely as possible.
