Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Animal science helps students explore and learn about animals and how each has unique qualities.

In this self-paced class we will learn about different animals and how they use hibernation, adaptation or migration to survive the cold temperature and lack of food during the winter.

This class is a self-paced course meaning we will not meet live together.

Each lesson will have 5 tasks that can be done one a day or more than one a day, what ever works best for your students! Each week will focus on one farm animal.

-Students will watch a video and complete worksheets.

-Students will learn a set of vocabulary words for the week and practice them.

-Each lesson will include an art project and/or a science experiment to help make what they are learning in class come alive at home!

-Students will be encouraged to make a spiral where they will store all their worksheets (this can be used for quizzes). This is a great resource for areas that require proof of work.

-There will be a final quiz to test what students have learned

Lesson 1
In this lesson we will discuss what hibernation is, what animals hibernate (bears, ladybug, frogs, hedgehogs), and complete a hibernation experiment and art project.

Lesson 2
In this lesson we will discuss how animals use adaptation to survive the winter. We will discuss what animals use adaptation and what they do to adapt (squirrel, fox, beavers, deer). We will also complete an adaptation experiment, art project and learn vocabulary words.

Lesson 3
In our last lesson we will learn about what migration is, and what animals migrate before the winter (Canada geese, Monarch butterflies, Humpback whales, Ruby-Throated humming birds). In this lesson we will do a mapping activity to show where different animals migrate, learn vocabulary words and end with a small experiment.
Learning Goals
Define Hibernation, identify animals that use it.
Define Adaptation, identify animals that have adaptations and what adaptations they have.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will briefly talk about when animals will breed/mate and it is included on the vocabulary for Migration. This is not talked about in detail but may prompt questions from students to parents. Parent may need to help with two of the experiments. In lesson 1 there will be boiling water being poured into a cup. Students may need help with this. In lesson 2 students will probably need help spreading the crisco onto their hand as it can be tricky to do alone. We will also be using games through Wordwall, for safety students can use just their first name, nick names or the first letter of their name. These review games are optional and parents can have students review vocabulary a different way at home. We will also be using Kahoot for the assessment quizzes. For accessing the certificate students will need to fill out a google form.
