Animal Science: Animal Genetics and Breeding
Class experience
This course gives students a foundation in basic genetics in the context of animal breeding and conservation. Taught by a molecular biologist. This course will use slides, worksheets, online labs (Flash player required), and activities to assist students in better understanding of genetics and how we use genetics in animal science and conservation biology. We will use real-world examples that bring the information to life. The course is segmented into ten 90-minute sessions and students are...
Students will improve their understanding of genetics and how we use the techniques when working in animal science and conservation. This course is designed to give students a "leg up" in a college setting as they will already be familiar with the terms used in molecular biology and genetics classes that students often struggle with.
I am currently earning my PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemical Engineering. I also have two years of experience teaching genetics at a university level. I am known for giving lots of information but in a manner that students can grasp easily. This course has been adapted to the age group while incorporating topics that students will encounter at the college level to provide them with the basics and setting them up for success in these difficult courses.
We will be using interactive labs and at the end will need to download a free genetics program. For the second to last class, we will need the following to extract DNA: Coffee filter Piece of fruit Liquid soap Salt Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) at least 90% Cup Water
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
At the beginning of the course the students will receive a syllabus outlining the classes and materials needed.
