Animal Heroes in War is a course that teaches about the impact of animals used in warfare through the ages including the animals used in the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Students will be introduced to specific animal heroes and the more exotic animals used in war. The course will examine how the animals were used and what impact they had on the war and soldiers. Thus, the learning objective is for students to understand the impact of war on various levels not just the...
Students will examine the role of animals in warfare and analyze how that role had an impact on the soldiers and/or outcome of the war. Hence, students will have the opportunity to practice their analytical and critical thinking skills using the factual knowledge presented during the course.
The study of animals in warfare has been a passion of mine for many years. Thus, I have included this topic in my history courses for 14 years as a high school classroom teacher of both World History and American History. In addition, I have a teaching degree in secondary social studies and while obtaining this degree I took a course that spent half the class time on this specific topic so I am well versed in the content.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal assessments will be made during the discussion and game. Misunderstandings and clarifications will immediately be addressed at that time.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
