In this 4 week class, learners will be taught the classic novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. Discussions, and fun activities while learning in-depth character analysis will help students master this allegorical masterpiece over Stalinism.

Class Experience
Animal Farm (ages 12-17) As students read Animal Farm by George Orwell they will learn the characters, plot, and hidden themes of the book as well as an in-depth analysis of each animal and the parallels to Joseph Stalin's Soviet Russia. Students will master this commonly required curriculum through discussions, character charts, and questions. We will also be playing some learning games as we study this classic novel! Animal Farm is fun! Week 1- I will have short lecture presentation...
Learners will learn about themes, characterization, satire, and plot. They will also have an understanding of the historical importance of the Russian Revolution and civics. Learners will also learn about the author and the relationship between his life and the novel. The sensitive topic of communism will be discussed to help learners understand the realities of totalitarianism. I will also be teaching the background information of the Russian Revolution at the beginning of the class to allow the learners to understand how the animal characters represent their real life counterparts.
I have been teaching language arts and social studies for over 10 years. I have an education degree from Kansas State University.
Reading outside of class will be a major component of this class. Learners will be expected to read approximately 3 to 4 chapters per week.
Each learner will need a copy of the novel Animal Farm.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Each learner progress is assessed through individual work. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace. We will be holding discussions and writing summaries of the novel.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This book uses satire to make a political point about totalitarianism and communism.Some of the animals in the story act in a violent way to each other.
