Animal Farm: An Interactive Minecraft Novel Study
In this 4-week class, students will read "Animal Farm," by George Orwell and help re-create Manor Farm in Minecraft. Students will be playing Minecraft Creative Mode in class.

**To participate in this class, students will need to have Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition (PC, Xbox, iPad, Switch and Android). This class is NOT compatible with Java.** Students will do more than just read "Animal Farm," they will immerse themselves in the story through gaming. Each week, students will read an assigned portion of the book, "Animal Farm," by George Orwell. In class, we will have a discussion of the reading before entering into Minecraft and completing various activities. Class discussion will take about 30 minutes and the rest of the time students will be working together on building projects related to the book. Class 1: - Who was George Orwell? - Introduce "Animal Farm" - What is setting, theme, and genre? Minecraft activities - Explore the Minecraft Realm and discuss how we will use it for class - Start building a house HOMEWORK: Read chapters 1-3 of the book. IN MINECRAFT, write talking points and words you don't know. Class 2: - Class discussion of reading - We will compare Snowball, Napoleon, and Squealer, define Animalism, and discuss new characters and create a list of "rules" created after the rebellion that will be modified throughout the course. Minecraft activities - Students will work together on assigned projects relating to the story. HOMEWORK: Read chapters 4-7 of the book. IN MINECRAFT, write talking points and words you don't know. Students will also complete an individual building project in Minecraft. Class 3: - Class discussion of the reading - Modify the "rules" and discuss the changes in everyday life on the farm - Discuss propaganda and gaslighting found in the book Minecraft activities - Students will work together on assigned projects relating to the story. HOMEWORK: Finish reading the book. IN MINECRAFT, write talking points and words you don't know. Students will also complete an individual building project in Minecraft. Class 4: - Class discussion of the reading - Modify the "rules" and discuss the changes that happened throughout the book Minecraft activities - Students will work together on assigned projects relating to the story. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Students will need to have Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition (PC, Xbox, iPad, Switch and Android). This class is NOT compatible with Java. They will also need to be able to interact in Zoom and play Minecraft at the same time. SKILL LEVEL: This class requires that students have prior experience playing Minecraft. We will be playing in Creative Mode, so beginner Minecraft players are welcome.

Parental Guidance
Animal Farm does depict some violence (animals killing other animals). In Minecraft, while students will have the ability to kill various mobs, we will be playing in Creative Mode, so students will not be required or encouraged to kill mobs.
