Class Experience

In this one time class, fellow ACNH fans will visit my island with unwanted or extra items. Upon entering my island, students will drop unwanted items and will search my island for new items of value, both items exchanged from fellow players as well as my own items. In the game, items are often received from villagers, floating balloons, and trees. Items can also be purchased in the Nook’s Cranny. Some items are more commonly found that others, depending on the season, the hemisphere of the island, and also the players own experiences. Some items tend to pile up quickly and players are left with an abundance of unwanted items. This swap meet offers students the chance to exchange for needed items.

In addition to each student’s donated items, there will be an abundance of items I will provide for exchange, to include clothing, housewares, tools and resources. Students will have a blast digging through other players’ unwanted items. Ten minutes prior to class, students will be given the dodo code to access my island. This is because traveling to another island is a slow process and each student will need to wait until it is their turn to enter the island. Of course, a student is not required to head to the island before class, it just makes the process easier if a few can alleviate the bottleneck. Upon landing, students may immediately find a place to drop their unwanted items and begin finding new ones. They will also be offered loads of bells to bring back with them.

Note: A Nintendo online subscription is required to participate in this class, as students will need to “visit” my island to look for the items.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a facilitator of several popular video game groups, I have enjoyed watching friendships blossom among the like-minded players. Some gamers are attracted to playing video games because they lack a real connection with most of their peers and the pandemic has been particularly isolating to these kids without connections. Other kids enjoy playing and talking about their favorite games to anyone with ears. Like my own son who is on the spectrum, kids who play video games often disconnect from the world around them. I have found that uniting kids with similar video game interests builds confidence and valuable social skills while making meaningful connections with the world around them.
