Animal Art & Poetry

Elementary school-age students will learn how to write poems or sketch wildlife such as pandas, reptiles, dolphins, narwhals, puffins, and other birds. S.T.E.A.M. classes are a great fit for all including gifted and neurodiverse learners.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
* STEAM is an educational approach that incorporates the arts into the more-familiar STEM model, which includes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

-Learn facts about a new animal chosen by the teacher or suggested by students
-On alternate weeks we will either write a poem or make a drawing of that week's animal
-Class format: introductions, slideshow with animal facts and whole group discussion, arts project (poetry OR animal art)
-At the end of class, learners are offered the opportunity to share their art pieces or read their poems to their peers

My goal is to build a welcoming, engaging, and educational community of learners. I'm sure students will be thrilled to know that there will be times when THEY get to choose what we are going to study the next week!

Since this is an ongoing class, each class stands on its own so you are not required to attend every week. You can start and stop your subscription to suit your schedule!

Judy is kind, inclusive, and inspires her students to be creative and proud of all their artwork! Part of creating art is enjoying the process, and the kids have a wonderful time learning, writing, and drawing with Judy. My daughter has been attending this class every Tuesday for over a year & a half now, and it is the highlight of her week!

***If you have a learner ages 5-7 that loves animals, check out my "Animals Would NEVER Do This" ongoing class where we write silly sentences together. https://outschool.com/classes/animals-would-never-do-this-silly-creative-writing-and-drawing-WrHvaloW?usid=dNC7E9pS&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link
Learning Goals
Students will see a map of the continent and country where the animal we are studying lives and discuss its habitat.

Students will learn interesting facts about each animal like what it eats, who its predators are, and what its family life is like. We will also talk about little-known tidbits of information about each creature.

With teacher guidance and modeling, students will use their creativity to write poetry based on a variety of styles. The poetry types include haiku, acrostic, word bowl, diamanté, shape, “Who Am I”, cinquain, and more.

Students will use basic art supplies and simple techniques to draw a new animal every other week. Individual creativity is encouraged.

Students will have the opportunity to share their writing and art with each other at the end of class.
