This a learner-led ongoing class that’s designed to be a show and tell and discussion club for nature enthusiasts or those who want to be! We will meet weekly to share with each other the neat plants and animals we’ve come across in our local environments. We will strive to actually identify the species of the organisms we encounter safely. My favorite way to do this is using the Seek mobile app. At the beginning of each meeting, enrolled learners will learn to use the mobile app Seek,...
I was a Girl Scout as a girl (and my mom and grandmother before me). In my family, passing down knowledge about our local nature habitats while spending time in these places was a significant past time. I grew up playing in the forests, lakes, rivers, springs, beaches, and hammocks of Florida. I learned to both love and respect nature for its beauty as well as its potential danger. Today I hike, bike, forage, and explore outdoors as often as possible. I am not a biologist, just an avid amateur.
To get the most out of their time in class, learners will need to spend some time outdoors in nature looking for some plants and animals to identify. Yes, your backyard is nature! Students are strongly encouraged to use the Seek app (found in the iOS App Store or Google play store) to identify organisms they encounter. The app will use the camera to identify and log their observations so that they can more easily share with the class!
Students are strongly encouraged to use the Seek mobile app found on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. It’s an app powered by the iNaturalist community and National Geographic. It will use your phone or tablets camera to identify and then log observations made while exploring in nature. Learners will want to use the app while exploring in nature as well as bring the device with the mobile app installed to class. In fact, it’s actually ideal to log into zoom and take class from the very device the app is loaded onto. This will allow them to screen share during class and show their images with all of us!
40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The Seek Mobile App, powered by iNaturalist and National Geographic, offers links to resources for more information on identified species, such as Wikipedia, etc. We will periodically reference these types of resources for some trivia-type knowledge on the plants and animals we discover.
Learning should always be at least enjoyable...preferably FUN!
