Class Experience

Welcome to Ancient Plagues! This course will be a mixture of lectures, discussions, short videos, and activities. I will assign a few easy, but entertaining readings or short assignments each week so students have some background. The topic overview can be seen below. We will begin classes with a short discussion to warm up and then move into a relaxed lecture open to questions and discussions at any time. I will try to work activity into each class session as well. Each class will have power points to go along with them with engaging photos.

This class is meant to be challenging! I will be asking your children to employ critical, high-level thinking to understand some of these ideas. I support them along the way, asking smaller questions to help them with this, and reminding them that it is meant to be challenging. There will be easier questions as well, but if you are uncomfortable with your child having to do difficult thinking, or for there to be some silent time while students think these questions through, this may not be appropriate for your learner. I always find that my students are able to rise to the occasion with some support, and come out the other side proud of the thinking they are able to do!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will be discussing death, disease, personal accounts of symptoms, and other things that may be disturbing to some students. We will focus on *hope* for the future and scientific research when discussing modern-day disease, but it still may be too much for some students. Please be vigilant about your student's mental health during this confusing time, and feel free to reach out with feedback or questions.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will use many ancient/historic sources including Thucydides, Galen, Procopius, Dante, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Hendrick Hondius, Sir Isaac Newton, John Snow, Joseph Lister, and more! Modern sources will also be included in our discussion of modern science.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
In undergrad, my research has been focused on ancient DNA, and in particular, ancient health. I am highly interested in ancient plagues, infectious disease, ancient medicine, traditional medicine, and microbial archaeology. I have written, and published, on this topic. In 2019, I was an Intern in Biological Sciences in Public Health at Harvard University studying ancient selection due to malaria outbreaks in African populations in a malaria biology laboratory. I love this topic because it is such an intersection of many of my interests: biology, history, and anthropology!
