In this three-lesson course, we will read and discuss one of the oldest law codes in history: the Code of Hammurabi, comparing Old Babylonia's sense of justice with our own.

Week 1: Introduction, Lines 1-49
-We will let Hammurabi introduce himself in the prologue.
-We will learn about Hammurabi's sense of justice in general, seeing its first application in property.
-We will illustrate a couple scenarios and compare Hammurabi's solution with a more contemporary approach.

Week 2: Lines 50-194
-We will engage in the intricacies of irrigation, trade, and family.
-We will engage in cultural analysis, both with Hammurabi's culture and our own.

Week 3: Lines 195-282, Epilogue
-We will examine policies regarding personal injury and business practice (doctors, building, wages).
-We will illustrate a couple scenarios and compare Hammurabi's solution with a more contemporary approach.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Much of Hammurabi's sense of justice differs widely from our own. Understanding another culture's customs is important, but some of Hammurabi will strike us today as violent and outdated.
