In this three-lesson course, we will read and discuss one of the oldest law codes in history: the Code of Hammurabi, comparing Old Babylonia's sense of justice with our own.

Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
Students will be able to discuss culture and justice through history and law both in an ancient and a modern context.
My expertise is in reading and interpreting ancient texts, and I have taught students for college credit how to apply these skills to the Code of Hammurabi. With an MA in Biblical Studies, I have had to study Hammurabi and related readings as historical background.
Homework Offered
Complete the assigned readings and the activities that go with them. Be ready to discuss in class.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Complete a reflective essay at the end of the class and submit it to your teacher for review.
Grades Offered
Much of Hammurabi's sense of justice differs widely from our own. Understanding another culture's customs is important, but some of Hammurabi will strike us today as violent and outdated.
You can read the Code of Hammurabi right here.
