Class Experience

The goal of this course is to understand the ancient Greek alphabet. Throughout this course, students are the detectives and understanding the Greek alphabet is the key to decoding clues and recovering the stolen Horn of Achilles! Students will learn all of the Greek letters, from Alpha to Omega, along with their phonetic pronunciations. Students will practice writing the letters and in the process, they will gather clues from witnesses and trace the path of the thief!  

Why learn the Greek alphabet? Ancient Greek is a beautiful and fascinating language. It is the basis for much of the technical terminology in both science and medicine and its responsible to about twenty percent of the words in our English vocabulary.  

This course incorporates interactive presentations and in class practice as well as worksheets and activities to complete independently.  Below is an outline for the course. This outline is subject to change depending on the pace of the students in the course. 

Course Outline

Day 1: The Greek Alphabet
- An introduction the Greek alphabet
- Origins of the Greek alphabet
The First Six Letters - Α,α, Β,β, Γ,γ, Δ,δ, Ε,ε, Ζ,ζ

Day 2: The Next Six Letter
- Η,η, Θ,θ, Ι,ι, Κ,κ, Λ,λ, Μ,μ
-find the thief

Day 3: The Next Six Letters
- Ν,ν, Ξ,ξ, Ο,ο, Π,π, Ρ,ρ, Σ,σ,ς
-follow the clues 

Day 4: The Last Six Letters
- Τ,τ, Υ,υ, Φ,φ, Χ,χ, Ψ,ψ, Ω,ω
-follow the clues

Day 5: Consonant Blends 
- special sounds consonants make when used together
- Vowels and Diphthongs
- review of vowels and the special sounds they make when used together
-solve the mystery

Supply List
There is not book for this course. However, students will need to be able to print worksheets and complete some of them on a google doc.
