This multi-media class uses a range of slides, stunning pictures, famous paintings, videos and maps to explore the Ancient Greek city state of Athens and the sanctuary town of Delphi. We will learn about famous monuments such as the Acropolis, Parthenon and Theatre of Dionysus. We will look at the role of the Agora in the daily lives of the ancient Athenians and the importance of drama and theatre to the local culture. We will look at the significance of famous figures such as Pericles and the founding of democracy in Ancient Athens. As children are often drawn to Ancient Greek history through Greek mythology we will also talk about the legend behind the name of Athens and the competition between Athena and Poseidon (two powerful Olympian Gods). Lastly, we will take a virtual visit to the sanctuary town of Delphi close to the capital of Athens and discuss its powerful role in history as the Oracle or Pythia was consulted before any major endeavour. The class will end with a quiz to consolidate knowledge and 10 minutes of drawing time. Learners will be encouraged to create a picture of their favourite part of Ancient Greece whether it be the competition between Athena and Poseidon, the Parthenon temple or the theatres dotted around Athens and Delphi. This class is interactive and learners will be encouraged to keep their cameras and microphones on.
