Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This class will explore various Ancient Civilizations and includes a variety of activities for learners to engage with. My goal is to inspire my learners to be historic investigators! More than just a history class- I will include opportunities for students to improve critical thinking skills and literacy abilities with reading and writing activities. As global citizens, I want my learners to explore and interpret information from multiple sources and viewpoints.

On Monday of each week, learners can expect a post in the Outschool classroom with the link to the Nearpod, an optional note-taking guide called a student guide and an overview (with more optional activities that can be explored). A "week" will run from Monday through Sunday, although the Nearpods will be accessible beyond that time. To allow for personalization and differentiation, a variety of activities are shared and all things in the lessons should be considered optional. Some of these optional activities include: polls, discussion boards, virtual field trips, matching activities, games, WebQuests, and videos etc...

I will encourage participation and interaction through things like discussion boards (in the Nearpods), OS posts, and individualized messages sent to learners with feedback.

Order of topics:
Week 1: Introduction/Big Human History
Week 2: Mesopotamia
Week 3: Egypt
Week 4: India
Week 5: China
Week 6: Greece
Week 7: Rome
Week 8: MesoAmerica: Maya & Aztec
Week 9: MesoAmerica: Inca & Review

Students are encouraged to ask questions, if needed. ALL activities in the weekly Nearpod are optional, so I encourage discussion between parents and learners to ensure expectations are aligned. Obviously, the more a learner engages with the course content, the more they will get out of the course. A positive class culture is a must and it is assumed everyone will treat each other with respect. Most importantly, I want all learners and parents to be 100% happy with the quality of this class. Any concerns, questions, or ideas for improvement should be communicated before the end of the class, so that adjustments can be made accordingly.

*I teach a version of this class that meets "live" once a week that is very similar to this FLEX class (except that one is 12 weeks long). Please also check out those reviews for more information about the experiences of prior learners (and their parents).
