Class Experience

While the Great Wall of China may define ancient China, there is so much more to learn about this amazing ancient culture!  They had an endless list of inventions, created great works of art and architecture, and had a highly organized society led by a series of successful dynasties. Through engaging slide presentations, lectures, and class discussion, the history of ancient China will be presented to students in a dynamic format.  We will meet 3 times, 35 minutes per week.  

Topics covered
Day 1:  geography of China and Asia, the Great Wall of China, the Silk Road, Terracotta Army, and the dragon and its symbolism in ancient China
Day 2:  The Forbidden City, review of geography, Chinese dynasties (Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han), Chinese art, Chinese inventions
Day 3:  Everyday life in ancient China, Chinese religion (Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism), Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan

Learning Goals

Students will develop a broad understanding of Ancient China including major landmarks of this culture, religion, and historical figures.  Students will learn about the Chinese dynasties and how society was organized.  Chinese artwork, inventions, and dragon symbolism will also be explored.  We will take a look at the everyday life of the ancient Chinese:  shelter, food, clothing, and the status of men, women, and children in this ancient culture.

A notebook or binder is encouraged for notetaking.

Supply List
notebook and pencil if student wishes to take notes, colored pencils/crayons for the map exercise on day 1, a thick marker and regular paper or 
watercolors and drawing paper for the Chinese character exercise on day 2.
