Description

Class Experience

Students will learn why people chose to settle in ancient China. They will also get inspired about why humans would choose a certain place to live and what resources they would need in order to survive in an ancient area.
I currently have a Masters degree in Education, and hold a California Social Science Teaching Credential. I have taught social science and social entrepreneurship in my current position as a public middle school teacher. I have taught sixth grade history both online and in person with sixth grade students, and I teach about ancient China in my class yearly.
No homework
Access to a device- computer or laptop preferred Access to reliable internet Access to Google Slides Access to Google My Maps (available if you have a gmail account)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Informal assessment: In your opinion, why do you think the people of ancient China chose this area to settle in? Write about resources humans need to survive and why this would be a good area for human settlement.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We will use Youtube to watch a video on the beginnings of ancient China. This video covers four topics: setting the stage, the geography of China, river systems, and environmental challenges. The video demonstrates the successes and challenges of the lives of the ancient Chinese people who settled there. Students will take notes on the four topics as they watch. Next, students will use Google My Maps which is a platform to learn geography. It allows students to pin locations on a map, and add images and descriptions for that location so that they can visualize what it would be like to visit each particular location. MyMaps also allows students to see how big the world is, and what life might look like in a place other than where they live.
