In this comprehensive program, learners will explore human facial anatomy for the artists. Learners will work on a self-portrait each week that consists of a study of the planes of the face, the skeletal and muscular structures, and will complete with a full pencil rendering. Learners can expect to work 1-2 hours per week on material, more or less time depending on their personal workflow. 5 lessons//5 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Proportions, Materials, and Reference.In this Lesson we review facial proportions, go over the materials needed, the resources and references we are using, and there is a bit of preparatory work to get ready for the deep dive in this course.Week 2Lesson 2Structure and The SkullLet's take a closer look at the skull and the four bone structures that create likeness in faces and portraits.Week 3Lesson 3Understanding PlanesIn this Lesson we look at the planes of the face and how to identify them. We ask ourselves, what will they mean for light and shadow?Week 4Lesson 4Muscles of the FaceTime to look at muscle structure and render half of the face in muscular system pertinent to portraits. This lesson gives us a better understanding of what's happening under the skin and why our faces move the way that they do.Week 5Lesson 5Rendering and CompletionIn this lesson we render the facial features with skin hair and all the details we are used to observing. We also talk about putting our work together and presenting it in a portfolio.
Homework Offered
Students can expect to practice techniques or concepts discussed each week, this will include drawing and/or reading.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Learners will be asked to have: a sketchbook that is 9x12 or 11x14 in size vellum drawing paper 9x12 (8-10 sheets) pencils (2H, HB, or 2B) eraser ruler one sheet of bristol board in any color one 9x12 strong illustration board (or equivalent) for assembling this completed project. clear tape (scotch or equivalent) for assembling this completed project. The teacher will provide reference images and links to videos each week during the program. Specific instructions will be given in the first class for taking a photograph to work from for this program. Learners will be required to print this photo to an 8x10 page in black and white. 2 copies will be recommended.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
In exploring anatomy in general, this classroom will make reference to the book "Anatomy for the Artist by Jeno Barcsay", as such some artistic anatomical nude drawings may be referenced in the classroom. This book is not required reading however some reference shared with learners will come from this text.
