Class Experience
US Grade 8 - 11
In this course, young ballet dancers will explore ballet technique through anatomical concepts. We will discuss bones, muscles and anatomical systems from a ballet perspective! This is a motion based class and dancers should be prepared to move while watching lectures (comfortable clothes and at least 6 square feet of space). Dancer should have at least an introductory understanding of ballet technique. Classes and topics cover beginner technique to advanced technique. Students should wear appropriate dance shoes. Each week, 2 videos will be posted. Students should follow along with these videos and participate in discussion threads. Week 1: Class 1: Speaking Ballet Anatomy- Directions and planes Students will learn how anatomical directional terms correspond to ballet positions. Class 2: Speaking Ballet anatomy- Motions Students will learn how anatomical movements correspond to ballet movements and steps. Week 2: Class 1: Joints of the body and ballet positions Students will learn what joints form traditional ballet positions. Class 2: Turn-out and Pelvic anatomy Students will learn how the hip and pelvic joints work together to create turn-out. Week 3: Class 1: Ballet alignment and core muscles Students will learn which abdominal muscles are responsible for proper ballet alignment. Class 2: Lower limb anatomy- Feet Students will learn how the bones in their feet move to create a pointed foot. Week 4: Class 1: Lower Limb anatomy- Jumps and Power Students will learn how muscles of the leg contribute to height and speed of jumps (petite and grande allegro). Class 2: Upper Limb anatomy- Port De Bras Students will learn how arm anatomy contributes to port de bras positioning. Week 5: Class 1: Muscles for Turning Students will learn which muscles maximize turning efficiency. Class 2: Stamina and Endurance Students will learn about the cardiovascular system.
