An Introduction to Gothic Literature and Edgar Allan Poe's Tell Tale Heart

First, students will be introduced to the Gothic genre through a powerpoint. This presentation will be interactive, and will include quick quizes and opportunity for discussion. Following, we will read The Tell Tale Heart, and watch an animation of this classic tale. Students are going to love this text as, although it is written in the 1800s, has relevant themes discussed today. Finally, we will answer oral comprehension questions on the Tell Tale Heart in order to further the students'...

Dear parents, Please be aware that Poe's Tell Tale Heart centers around the theme of mental health: whether or not the narrator of the story is mad. (Spoiler) Younger or more sensitive students are not recommended for this class. The narrator discusses killing the old man he lives with. Because the genre of the text is gothic and NOT horror, it is not bloody or grotesque, but it is a major plot point that parents need to be aware of.
