Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
First, students will be introduced to the Gothic genre through a powerpoint. This presentation will be interactive, and will include quick quizes and opportunity for discussion. Following, we will read The Tell Tale Heart, and watch an animation of this classic tale. Students are going to love this text as, although it is written in the 1800s, has relevant themes discussed today. Finally, we will answer oral comprehension questions on the Tell Tale Heart in order to further the students' understanding of the text and the Gothic genre.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Dear parents, Please be aware that Poe's Tell Tale Heart centers around the theme of mental health: whether or not the narrator of the story is mad. (Spoiler) Younger or more sensitive students are not recommended for this class. The narrator discusses killing the old man he lives with. Because the genre of the text is gothic and NOT horror, it is not bloody or grotesque, but it is a major plot point that parents need to be aware of.
Supply List
A hand out of the Tell Tale Heart text will be provided

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Ms. Amanda and I was born to teach. I have two younger sisters and when I was little, I would play teacher with them all the time. As a child, I even taught my sister Sam how to read. I love reading and Harry Potter is my all-time favourite series (yes that is how you spell favourite in Canada).

Now that I am all grown up, I have had the pleasure to teach everything from Pre Kindergarten to grade 6, Adult Basic Education and college level courses. I was even the Principal and Student Support Teacher of a small school for a few years! I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, a BEd, a Masters of Science in Education with a specialist in reading and literacy and am currently a Doctoral Candidate.

I believe that all students can learn when the teacher recognizes student choice and multiple intelligences, and when strong relationships are fostered through listening and sharing. This will develop a lifelong love of learning.

I can't wait to virtually meet my students from across the continent!

Talk to you soon,
Ms. Amanda
