US Grade 2 - 5
In this 6 week class, we will go on a journey through our solar system. We will learn about the sun, the moon, the planets, and many other objects found at our end of the Milky Way. We will learn in a variety of ways by watching video clips, viewing slideshows, listening to and singing fun songs, and having lots of discussions as we explore a different topic each week. We will also complete some hands-on activities or projects that accompany certain lessons. These will be posted in the classroom the week before they are needed so that they can be printed off ahead of time. Here is a breakdown of our weekly lessons: Week 1: We will be introduced to our galaxy and read and learn all about stars, particularly our sun. We will learn about the Earth, why we have day and night, and why we have seasons. We will also learn why Earth is the only planet in our solar system that can sustain life. Week 2: We will read and learn all about the moon and its phases. We will complete the phases of the moon activity. We will also learn about the first moon landing. Week 3: We will read and learn all about the inner planets, how fast they orbit and rotate, and their distances from the sun. We will also learn about the main asteroid belt that separates the inner and outer planets. We will complete a chart for the first 4 planets and their distances. Week 4: We will read and learn all about the outer planets, how fast they orbit and rotate, and their distances from the sun. We will also learn about the moons that orbit these planets. We will complete a chart for the last 4 planets and their distances. Week 5: We will read and learn all about comets, asteroids, and dwarf planets. We will also learn about the dwarf planet Pluto and why it used to be considered the ninth planet. Week 6: We will read and learn all about meteors, meteorites, and meteoroids. We will also complete a model of the solar system using candy. We will use butterscotches, nerds, regular M&Ms and mini M&Ms, peppermints, lifesavers, snow caps, gumdrops, and pop rocks.
