American Symbols: Discover the Jefferson Memorial!
Students will learn about the Jefferson Memorial and its place in government in Washington, DC as well as the life of Thomas Jefferson in this class that integrates US history, American Sign Language, music, and art.

This class is part of a group of patriotic classes exploring American Symbols. Students will discover the history of the Jefferson Memorial including its design, symbolic components, and the Tidal Basin on which it sits. We will also explore the life and legacy of President Thomas Jefferson through a PowerPoint slide presentation. I will use questioning techniques and discussion as students interact with each other and me. Following the PowerPoint, students will create a step-by-step drawing of cherry blossoms. They will draw, write, or tell one fact they learned. I will teach the students a few lesson-related signs in American Sign Language as well as a patriotic song. This class will be informative, engaging, and supportive in a joyful, non-partisan environment. I prefer cameras remain on throughout the class to facilitate interaction with each other and with me and to allow me to assist in the students' sign language acquisition.

My excitement about American symbols began with travels to Washington, DC. I loved stepping onto the exact spot Martin Luther King Jr. stood for his iconic I Have a Dream speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the White House thrilled me as I imagined the historic individuals who had walked its halls. I have enthusiastically taught many learners about Washington, DC through books, music, and plays. I'm so excited to share my knowledge and experience with Outschool students!
I am a teacher certified to teach elementary grades 1-6 and deaf/HH students pre-K-12. I worked as an educational interpreter for several years and as an elementary teacher for many years.
