In this 8-week course, your students will learn to communicate in American Sign Language. This includes common vocabulary, grammar that will be taught and reviewed weekly. Parents and students have access to a signed list of vocabulary through the website, "Signing Savvy". Students will learn ASL vocabulary and grammar of American Sign Language. They will learn how to change English phrases and sentences into ASL and vice versa. Students will learn the manual alphabet and practice fingerspelling throughout the classes. Both expressive (using ASL) and receptive (understanding ASL) will be emphasized. Students will learn some aspects of Deaf culture so that they begin to understand a little about the people who use ASL as their primary language of communication.
Students should practice the signs they learn on a weekly basis. They should practice fingerspelling to gain fluency.
A link to all the signs we learn in class will be provided. I use the website signingsavvy.com for ASL vocabulary.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Signing Savvy is a website that has an ASL video dictionary. I use it to list the vocabulary students learn in each class, and I send a link so that you can access the vocabulary. You do not need to sign up with the website.
