Take on a new hobby and learn American Sign Language along with Deaf culture!
In this 15-week course, students will participate in live, weekly lessons with peers and the instructor.

How is this class conducted:
Class meets one time a week for 45 minute sessions. During this time, students will learn basic ASL signs and phrases. Students will be instructed to practice signing while on Zoom with the instructor and/or peers.

There will also be a weekly assignment where students will watch a 1-3 minute video of the instructor signing (voice-off) and students will type the responses (Receptive video Practice)

Lesson Schedule:
Week 1:
-The Alphabet and basic introductions
Your child will learn the alphabet in Sign Language and proper palm orientation. We will also practice fingerspelling each of our names. Students will be encouraged to practice their ABC’s each day with a friend, family member, or sibling.

-Option to record themselves signing their name to the class

Week 2:
-Numbers 1-20
In our second week, your child will learn numbers 1-20 using proper hand parameters and learn why hand placement is so important when producing numbers.

Week 3:
-Emotions
In our third week, students will learn how to sign emotions and how to ask, “How are you today?” Students will practice signing different emotions as a response to practice expressive and receptive skills.

Week 4:
-Colors
In our fourth week, students will learn all about colors. They will be able to ask, " What is your favorite color?" And identify color signs. The instructor will show an object, sign the color and the object.

-Option to record themselves signing their favorite color(s)

Week 5:
-Review Day
In our fifth week, we will review all that we have learned so far. 
Assignment: Receptive Skills Quiz
Assignment: Expressive Skills Quiz (students can record themselves signing a list of vocabulary/phrases)

Week 6:
-"W" Questions.
Students will learn how to sign, "Who, What, When, Where, Why, Which, How, How Many" and how to sign short phrases using these terms.

Week 7: 
-Numbers 20-100
Students will learn how to sign the "20's" and beyond up to 100. Students will learn how to form numbers once they master the 1-20 numbers and how to sign ANY number in sign language using those skills!

Week 8:
-Animals
Our third week, students will learn how to sign different animal species. They will also learn and practice asking, What is your favorite animal?" They will be able to answer this question in ASL as well.

-Option for students to record themselves signing their favorite animal(s)

Week 9: 
-People and Family
Our fourth week, the instructor will teach how to sign different groups of people and family members. This includes, "man, woman, girl, boy, children, people, mom, dad, siblings, etc."

Week 10:
-Review Day
In our tenth week, we will review all that we have learned so far. 
Assignment: Receptive Skills Quiz
Assignment: Expressive Skills Quiz (students can record themselves signing a list of vocabulary/phrases)

Week 11:
-Clothing and Describing 
In our eleventh week students will learn to sign different types of clothing and items worn by people. They will be able to describe someone's outfit and identifiers such as: "That girl is wearing a black hat, red boots, and glasses."

Week 12:
-Places
In our twelfth week students will learn some common places such as the library, home/house, bathroom, school, church, stores and shops, and the pool. Students will be able to practice asking where a person is and pick different places to sign.

-Option to record themselves signing their favorite food

Week 13
-Food
In our thirteenth week students will begin learning signs related to food. They will learn some of the following: Apple, banana, orange, pizza, burgers, salads, hotdogs, tacos, etc. They will also learn common phrases related to food such as, "What is your favorite food?" And, "My favorite food is..."

Week 14
-Deaf Culture
In our fourteenth week, students will have a lesson on Deaf culture, other uses for ASL, how a person becomes deaf, and the importance of ASL to Deaf culture.
*There will not be receptive lesson this week.*

Week 15
-Review Day
In our last and final week of ASL I, we will do a comprehensive review of all 15 weeks of this course. There will be a final assessment; An expressive and receptive. 

*The Monday class will not take place on Labor Day (9/4/23) but will go an extra week to make up for the lost class.*
