Class Experience

Students will learn basic American Sign Language vocabulary. These are the vocabulary words that I saw were the most beneficial to students when learning how to communicate in early grades. American Sign Language has been proven to help with speech, and be beneficial in later years. Signs can accommodate a wide range of learning styles, including visual learners, kinaesthetic, social and verbal.
Students will learn:

Day 1: Students will learn the alphabet. We will play a fun BINGO game.

Day 2: Let's eat! Students will learn basic food and "mealtime" vocabulary. Students will review newly learn vocabulary by telling the class their favorite food. Students will learn vocabulary words for food, drinks, fruits and vegetables. Students will also learn "mealtime" signs including MORE, PLEASE, THANK YOU, and many more signs! Students will also learn colors.

Day 3: Sports and activities. Students will learn signs for different sports and activities. Students can bring a jersey of their favorite team, or bring a trophy to share, or their favorite book.

Day 4: Students will learn different family vocabulary words. Students may bring a drawn picture of their family to point to a person and practice the appropriate sign. Students are encouraged to draw their pet as well, to practice
animal vocabulary from yesterday!

Day 5: Students will learn "feelings" signs. We will discuss being expressive when we sign each feeling. We will use flashcards to review newly learned vocabulary. We will put all the vocabulary we have learned together with a fun review game.
