FALL SEMESTER Our fall semester starts the week of August 25th and runs through December 21st. You can join anytime, however, the material does build. If a class has 0 students it will start from day 1. Message us if you want to find out what day/time a specific class is on. Learn the alphabet, conversational questions, colors, numbers, food, animals, holidays, days of the week, temperature, sports, sentence structure, culture, states etc. in American Sign Language. How this ASL class structured? The teacher instructs the students with a mini lesson, then we open the class up for questions and conversation throughout each session. How does Ms. Rachel teach? She will teach through visual representation and demonstration (hand signals). She has a fun environment, adapt to the pace of the students’ level and encourage participation. The interactive style will vary from direct lectures to games and discussions. At the end of each lesson, she will go around and ask each student to demonstrate what they have learned in class today. New Classes Are Always Starting! Message us with any questions. Week 1 - Alapahbet The first lesson for every language is learning the alphabet. This will lay the foundation to spell words in every topic area moving forward. In addition, we will start with basic activities that incorporate the alphabet (names). They will know how to ask “What is your name?” and be able to say “My name is __.” We'll also discuss the history and culture of ASL names. Week 2 - Numbers Focusing on numbers will help the class be able to respond back to “How old are you?” Numbers are essential to learn in the beginning lessons. Week 3 - Colors- Learning the colors is another beginner topic that is essential. The short-term goal is to be able to talk about least favorite and favorite colors, etc. Week 4 - Clothing One way to incorporate colors is talking about clothing items. Clothing items are used everyday so it is important to know the signs. Sentence structure will be taught throughout learning the various topics which will be discussed in a conversation about the culture. Week 5 - Animals A way of keeping students engaged is by discussing fun topics and what student doesn’t like to learn about animals?! Week 6 - Family Being able to talk about yourself shows you know about the language. At this point, students will be able to describe who is in their family, their age, what they like and don’t like, etc. Week 7 - Describing a person- This is a topic that works with sentence structure. It is important that they know how to describe someone and the various parts of a sentence. Week 8 - Culture Examples include how to gain someone’s attention who is Hard of Hearing or Deaf. Rachel is going into her junior year at the College of Wooster. She is pursuing a double major in French and Spanish with a double minor in Russian and German. On top of that, Rachel speaks Hebrew and knows how to communicate in American Sign Language. She has many experiences teaching languages to children because in 2019 she started her own language program. She helped children learn American Sign Language, French, Spanish and Russian.
Rachel recently studied abroad in France and had the opportunity to teach English as a second language to middle school students. While she was there she also practiced her translation skills.
She has a passion for foreign languages because she enjoys being able to communicate with people. She grew up surrounded by different languages, which increased her curiosity in language learning. She brings that curiosity and passion to the classroom. Rachel adores working with children because she loves seeing them excited to learn! She is kind, engaging and a very good listener so she is able to cater to different learning styles and make students comfortable.
