Class Experience

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
1. Comprehend gestured discourse by responding appropriately to gestures, following commanded gestures, and retelling information in visual gestural form or verbal form.
2. Formulate and produce gestural discourse by describing the size, shape and movement of objects using gestures (also known and Classifiers), describing places, people, and things using gestures, and describing emotions using visual gestures.
3.Retell stories using body language, facial expressions, and visual gestures.
4. Identify the difference between gestures and signs.

I have worked with children in many fields such as daycare, homeschooling, and equine therapy. Because of this experience I am well equipped to be working with children and teaching them. I am currently majoring, in college, in American Sign Language Interpreting. I have a certificate in American Sign Language and Deaf studies. I have a passion and love for ASL and want to share that passion and skill with others!
Most if not all homework will be practice assignments. For example a student may be asked to practice facial expressions in the mirror until the next week of class or watch a video of a deaf child using visual gestures to describe something. No assignments or homework will need to be submitted.
Supply list: I will be using a few different text books as resources in class but no outside materials need purchasing. If you wish you can contact the instructor for material/text/resource suggestions to further your learning.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Due to the nature of the course, it is important to follow visual gestural skills attained in class, which will affect your learning. Students who have poor attendance or miss class exercises tend to struggle with their visual gestural skills. This type of class requires that you attend and learn visual gestures.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
