Class Experience
This ASL class is a long-time in the making! As Karen Lemons tried to find ASL teachers for her own teenagers, she only found one who taught in a method that focused on language acquisition in a fun atmosphere with active students. That teacher is amazing but had limited availability, so Karen went out and hired her own teacher for Lemons-Aid. And here we are, offering amazing American Sign Language classes to our community of learners. And you will LOVE our ASL teacher. In this class...
Kimberly Chapman teaches all of the ASL classes for Lemons-Aid Education. She has a B.S. in Sociology / ASL Interpreting and years of ASL interpreting and teaching at the elementary and high school levels at her homeschool co-op. She has created a curriculum and led interdisciplinary ASL language and culture classes based on extensive research, experience, and application. She has also advised students in post-graduate ASL interpreting fields. Mrs. Chapman knows that ASL is not simply a language. It is resolutely attached to a very strong culture, deeply rooted in history, pride, and even pain. She loves ASL and has genuine respect for the Deaf culture. It is a part of her heart. Karen Lemons, the Founder of Lemons-Aid, is certified to teach Spanish and was trained by Blaine Ray himself in the TPRS methodology of foreign language instruction that has a focus on mastery learning, or language acquisition. TPRS stands for Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling. Karen was able to implement these strategies in her Spanish classroom and saw the powerful effect they had on student learning. With Kimberly's ASL expertise and Karen's passion for effective pedagogy, focused on learner outcome, they have developed a series of courses that your learners will love.
