We learn through different methods in this class. Sometimes words are presented and students repeat after me. Sometimes we learn through stories. Students typically have to see the sign being used first before they are able to produce the signs.Students are encouraged to participate. I try to vary presentation formats, sometimes we focus more on output (meaning students signing) sometimes I focus more on input (meaning me signing). *I love to celebrate holidays so we do celebrate American holidays, if your class falls on the following holiday we will be doing a holiday activity:
New Years, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July.

*I do use my voice to explain certain grammatical feature of ASL unless we have a deaf/HH student in which case we will be complete voice off.

*full immersion encouraged -Goal: 90% Sign language

**I do use breakout rooms for students to practice their newly learned skills, if it is a class with more than 3 students, if you are not comfortable with using breakout rooms, please let me know**
**Please bring paper/pencils or a white board to class everyday**
**Homework is encouraged but not required**

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings!

My name is Myra Coria. My passions in life are American Sign Language, Spanish and English. Besides teaching, I also enjoy playing tennis and drinking coffee. I am thrilled to share my knowledge about these subjects with you and your student.

I began learning sign language at the age of 14. So, I know the importance of getting started at a young age! I learned by interpreting for parents at an Atlanta school for the Deaf. I interpreted from Sign Language to Spanish and I was fascinated by the language and deaf culture every time I went to class. From there, I was determined to become a teacher for the deaf.

I graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelors of Science in Special Education and a Master’s in Special Education with a concentration in Deaf Education.

I taught 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, and special education/Deaf education in public school for several years. I taught Spanish in high school at a private school. I also did homebound education for a few years (teaching at hospitals and homes for sick students). I have been a learning specialist for students with disabilities for five years.

Teaching languages for me is personal. I believe languages are bridges for all the cultures.

See you in class!
