This is a great opportunity to learn American Sign Language. Students will have fun in this interactive class learning a world language with confidence. Participants will learn about Deaf culture or history on some signs we use. We will learn categories and concepts for ASL. Students have the flexibility of joining or dropping anytime class is offered. I will send an American Sign Language alphabet sheet and number sheet. Most signs use either the same form or shape as a base from the alphabet or number sheet provided. This is useful to know ahead of time, but not mandatory. I will always model and demonstrate correct hand-shape and form when learning new signs. Thirty minutes will be dedicated to learning new topics and practicing these signs in conversation. I will always be available after the 30 minutes to be reserved for students that wish to stay longer to practice or when time permits, I will sign stories related to the topic we learned during this session. Students will enjoy seeing how signs come to life. Storytelling is a big part of Deaf culture. Week 1 9/1/22 Topic: Greetings & Feelings We will learn about Deaf culture and etiquette. Thank you for enrolling in my class. I look forward to sharing my expertise in American Sign Language (ASL). For thirteen years, I was in Deaf Education PreK-12th grade and was an Interpreter for the Deaf. I have taught hearing students sign language, so that they were able to communicate with their fellow Deaf and Hard of Hearing peers. I taught my own children ASL and they thought it was very cool. My daughter, who is Dyslexic, felt it was an easier language to learn versus a spoken foreign language.
I fell in love with ASL and discovered it was a beautiful language that people find fascinating. If learning a new language has been difficult, I guarantee American Sign Language is the one for you to learn. In this class, we will learn together, be able to communicate in ASL, and most importantly have fun!
