Description
Class Experience
You will learn the manual alphabet and many ASL signs. In the end of this extensive beginning course, learners will have learned 100s of signs and will be able to sign basic sentences and communicate in ASL, on a beginning level. Learners will have a rich understanding of the Deaf community, history, culture, well known Deaf people, Deaf people who changed, or are changing the world, important events in history connected to the Deaf community and people with disabilities, and so much more.
Homework will consist of studying vocabulary words and fingerspelling/alphabet. The text is located online, but will NOT be used in class. It is to use at home, on your own time. Homework will consist of practicing sentences on your own time. Videos will be assigned to watch at home (YouTube) and will be discussed in class the following day.
We will do one art project during week 2. For the project, learners will be needing paper--construction or colored paper works best, markers or colored pencils, scissors, glue or a glue stick.......You can type out in Gallaudet font words later. Here's how: https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/gallaudettruetypefont.htm
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
If learners would like to get credit/assessments for this class, if allowed by their charter, etc, they can ask for assessments and projects to be completed and graded by the teacher. Please contact the teacher prior to class beginning.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
There will be nothing inappropriate shown or discussed in class.
We will be watching some approved YouTube videos of people signing and viewing some websites related to the subject matter. This information will be screen shared. Short children's books (approved) will be read by the teacher to introduce the learners to a variety of situations involving Deaf people, and Deaf culture. Websites to view words learned will be shared in class and in files.
