Homework
1-2 hours per week. In order to get better at any skill, practice is necessary. To retain what they learn in class, students will need to practice what they learn throughout the week. Practice should take place anywhere from 1-2 hours a week.
Assessment
Students will participate in activities and games throughout our meetings. By the end of our course, students will be able to introduce themselves and family members in sign language, as well as tell the class an interesting fact about themselves.

Beginner Level
Welcome to American Sign Language Class: The Basics, I'm so glad you're here!
In this class, students will learn the basics of American Sign Language, including how to sign numbers, letters, colors and more. Did you know that Deaf people around the world not only have their own language, but their own culture? We will not only learn the beginning stages of the language, but we will also dive into Deaf culture. 
This class will be very interactive with plenty of chances for discussion and practicing our skills. Participation is key!

Course schedule:
Week 1 - Letters and Numbers 
Week 2 - Greetings and Common Phrases
Week 3 - Colors and Animals
Week 4 - Family Members and Feelings

At the end of the course, students will be able to introduce themselves in sign language and tell other learners a few facts about themselves and their families. Learners will also play games throughout the course to increase the use of facial expressions and movement. No prior experience or knowledge of American Sign Language is required.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basics of how to communicate in American Sign Language and will be able to introduce themselves, their family members and their interests. Topics include: Letters and Numbers, Greetings and Common Phrases, Colors and Animals, Family Members and Feelings.

I started teaching myself sign language since 2014 until I was able to start taking classes in 2016 in college. I've been taking ASL classes for 5 years in college and I've been to multiple ASL meet ups in the community. I currently host an ASL club at my school to teach students sign language. I’m currently studying to become an interpreter.
