In this 32 week class, students will explore excerpts from a wide range of American Literary works.  Students will gain basic knowledge of the authors and their works through discussion, games, projects and guided reading activities.

If you need a literature credit, but you hate to read, THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU!  You will be served a buffet of the American classics, learn about the authors and context of the times.  So grab some coffee, it's time to get that credit!

Today we will discuss the Author and do an author profile.  In addition, we will also begin our discussion on Puritan history and how it is woven in the story.

The Scarlet Letter

We will finish Scarlet Letter by analyzing the plot using Freytag's Pyramid. 

We will discuss Cooper and do an author profile. We will also do a crash course in the French/Indian War.

The Last of the Mohicans

We will finish Last of the Mohicans discussion and write a short event/approach paper on the French and Indian War.

We will do an author profile on Irving and begin a discussion on Romanticism and how to adapt an old plot to a new story.

Rip Van Winkle/Headless Horseman

We will finish our discussion on The Headless Horseman and read our re-written poems for either Irving or Longfellow.

We will do an author profile and learn about the early beginnings of Abolition in the US.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Today we will discuss the plot of the story and some of the themes that Stowe weaves through out the storyline.

Finishing up, we will discuss the effects this book had on the nation.

We will do an author profile on Herman Melville and begin to discuss  the plot as well as a brief history of the whaling industry.

Moby Dick

Finishing up, we will compare the story of Jonah and the Whale with the sermon of Father Marple.

We will do an author profile and discuss the time period that this story takes place.

Little Women

Today we will discuss the plot and do some character analysis.

Finishing up, we will do a review of all of our stories and take the midterm.

We will do an author profile on Mark twain and discuss American Realism in literature.

Huck Finn

Continuing with our travelers down the Mississip., we will discuss the plot and how Twain used irony and humor in presenting serious issues.

Finishing with Huck Finn, we will also discover some Uncle Amos' Tales- and maybe the old Splash Mountain Ride at Disney- and the controversy.

We will read colonial literature from Anne Bradstreet and John Newton. 

American Poetry

Today, we will discuss Longfellow's Evangeline and Hiawatha by reading excerpts and doing a summary of both of these poems.

Today we will read from Oliver Wendell Holmes (Old Iron Sides) and Ralph Waldo Emerson 

We will read Walt Whitman's O Captain, My Captain and excerpts from Dickinson and Frost.

Today we will do an author profile and discuss the Roarin' 20's as context.

The Great Gatsby

We will discuss the plot of the novel and consider the influence of Modernism in literature as it pertained to the American Dream.

We will finish up Gatsby discussion today and finish with character analysis.

Today we do an author profile and discuss the impact of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression on the country.

The Grapes of Wrath

We will discuss the plot using Freytag's Pyramid today.

Let's do a character analysis of both major and minor characters.


We will do an author profile and discuss Jim Crow and mid-20th c racial issues.

To Kill A Mockingbird

Today we will dive deeper into the plot and story line.

Finishing up, we will discuss the characters individually and thesis writing for final paper.

We will do an author profile on Hemingway (and his cats.) We will also discuss what a novella is and how it is different to a novel.

Old Man and the Sea

We will finish up the year and have our final.

Using IEW's Writing Structure and Style, this class will cover Unit 3, all Disney Parks themed!  We will be using examples from the attractions Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway and Mickey's Phil-harmagic to retell narratives.

In this 3 week sp class, students will read Animal Farm and answer corresponding questions that check comprehension. Various revolutions will be discussed with an in-depth look at communism and the author, George Orwell.

In this 3 week class, students will learn how to summarize a reference, use citations and rewrite that information in their own words.  Our focus will be on Walt Disney's triumph at the World's Fair and his original plans for EPCOT.

This 3 day Disney Parks inspired camp will inspire even the most reluctant writers. We will practice taking notes, outlining,  using dress-ups and sentence openers as well as Imagineering our own stories. Plus, we will make an Epcot recipe!
