American Gothics: Hawthorne
In this 4-week course, students will be introduced to one of the masters of American Gothicism and study three of his works.

Students will participate in an introductory session with guided notes. For the next three sessions, students will read a short story prior to attending class, taking notes and completing a short journal response. Class sessions will revolve around the discussion of the text, including student input and additional handouts/worksheets to drive discussion and further comprehension. Topics covered will include American Gothicism as a genre, allegory, symbolism, plot, figurative language, and more. Week 1: Introduction to American Gothicism and Nathaniel Hawthorne * Homework: Read "Rappaccini's Daughter"; complete reflection journal Week 2: "Rappaccini's Daughter" discussion and analysis * Homework: Read "Young Goodman Brown"; complete reflection journal Week 3: "Young Goodman Brown" discussion and analysis * Homework: Read "The Minister's Black Veil"; complete reflection journal Week 4: "The Minister's Black Veil" discussion and analysis; wrap up
Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of the subgenre of American Gothicism and Hawthorne's contributions. They will learn to think critically and examine texts for allegorical meanings, symbols, and more.

There are mentions of the supernatural (God and the devil) as well as potions/poisoning.
Supply List
Students will be provided with an introductory PowerPoint presentation and guided notes, as well as handouts for each of the three stories. PDF versions of the stories will also be provided. Students will need a PDF reader to access texts and handouts. They may also want additional paper and pencil/pen for notes.
