In this lighthearted 4 meeting discussion based book club young learners will study The Riddle of the Robin by Valerie Tripp from the American Girl Wellie Wishers series along with peers in order to promote friendship, social interaction, emotional intelligence, understanding of the natural world and creativity. Each week we will summarize and discuss a portion of the book using a pictorial plot line in class and complete a related learning activity or craft. Learners are invited to bring their doll friends along with them to class each week to join in the fun if they would like to. All learners will need a copy of the Riddle of the Robin for their own personal use at home so that they are able to read the required book chapters at home with an adult prior to class in order to participate in the learning sessions. Learners will also need arts and craft supplies listed in the materials section of the class. Week 1: Learners will read chapter 1 of The Riddle of the Robin at home with an adult prior to class. In class we will summarize the chapter through group discussion and creating a pictorial time/plot line together. We will have a “Signs of Spring” show and tell where students will bring photos or objects to class from their homes and yards that show spring has arrived. The teacher will be sharing bird nests and bird eggs with the class to increase students awareness of nesting birds as a sign of spring. Week 2: Learners will read chapters 2 and 3 of The Riddle of the Robin at home with an adult prior to class. In class we will summarize the chapters through group discussion and continue creating a pictorial time/plot line together. We will discuss how to search for birds using binoculars. Learners will find out what birds eat and use yarn or string and Cheerios cereals to create bird feeder garlands in class. Week 3: Learners will read chapters 4, 5 and 6 of The Riddle of the Robin at home with an adult prior to class. In class we will summarize the chapters through group discussion and continue creating a pictorial time/plot line together. Learners will explore the concept of what to do when you feel worried or scared through examining the characters in the story and how they cope with these emotions as they define the problem and seek solutions. We will make our own tissue paper flowers and then we will practice the calming technique “smell the flowers, blow out the candles” along with our friends from class and our dolls. Week 4: Learners will read chapters 7 and 8 of The Riddle of the Robin at home with an adult prior to class. In class we will summarize the chapters through group discussion and continue creating a pictorial time/ plot line together. We will celebrate the completion of the book by creating our own wellies that show off our own personal style using printable cutouts and marker.
