Class Experience

Long time American Girl collector here. I have been customizing dolls for years. You never know when you run across an American Girl doll for $5 at a yard sale and think, "What an awesome deal!" Then you see her condition and think, "What a hot mess!" There is hope! If your learner has a doll that could be labeled a "hot mess," this class will help transition that hot mess into something lovely again. I can't promise a miracle, but I can promise to help improve her looks.

It is important to know several things. First, this is not just for American Girl dolls. Any 14-18" dolls will work. The things I will teach and show the students can be used on most other dolls. Another important thing to consider is this, there are times in this class that a younger child could use the help of another adult. We will be using hot glue guns and I don't want anyone to get burned. I also want an adult to be around if you are concerned about your child hurting the hot mess even more. This is a very gentle make-over so I don't foresee any problems.

This is a five-day make-over camp. Students will learn how to safely clean the vinyl that will be quite dirty from play. Even if you can't see dirty, they still need to be gently cleaned. Students will learn how to safely brush the doll's hair, helping to bring back the original style and shine. I will be giving various tips on how to clean the skin and style the hair safely. Now that the doll is pretty again, it is time to design some clothes. Students will learn how to design a no-sew shirt and a tutu. This is a LOT of fun to do. On the final day, they will have the opportunity to have their doll walk the catwalk. Students will have their doll model her new look and the new fashion designs they created. If time allows, I will also teach them how they can photograph their doll, then remove the background, and then add them to any background they want. If time does not allow for this, I will send a video of how I do it. Girls love this activity.

Students will be given a list of materials, mostly found around the home, when they enroll.

I have more American Girl/doll classes coming soon!

I am super excited to teach the children how to take care of their dolls.

Day 2: Hair Care (brushing hair safely, restyle)

I am super excited about teaching your child the many exciting treasures I have learned about people, places, and things. I have a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Science Degree in Education with an emphasis in Children's Literacy. I have 13 years of experience in the mainstream classroom but have been working closely with children in various settings for 30 years. I have been teaching English to children in China for VIPKID and absolutely love it. I am married to a courageous firefighter and have two children that I homeschool. My daughter is 8 and my son is 10. I am a leader in a large local homeschool co-op. Traveling around the world is a hobby of mine. I enjoy meeting people and learning about new cultures. Teaching is my passion and I am energized by it. Teaching your child will be the energy highlight of my day. I believe children learn best while being fully engaged which happens when fun is involved. When I love what I am teaching, they will love what they are learning. If I am not learning, I am not having fun. I look forward to having your child in my classroom.
