Description
Class Experience
Do you have a curious child with a playful imagination? If so, this class may be for you! During our 8 weeks together, we will be doing a deep dive into the American Girl doll, Samantha Parkington, an adventurous Edwardian from 1904. Every week, we will have a discussion about Samantha's story and time period, and we will engage in activities that reflect Samantha's experiences. We will be covering all six of Samantha's original books during this class, so students can expect to read one...
This class is taught in English.
This is my 15th year as a secondary English teacher, and my favorite units of all are interdisciplinary ones where I can combine many of my passions into one rich learning experience! Personally, I have been an avid American Girl doll collector since I was a child, and have read through the series and have done the activities with my own six year-old. I would love to share this excitement for American Girls, reading, history, and culture with your children, too!
We will be reading one Samantha book a week, and there will be a light amount of work to go along with that to reflect their comprehension (journaling, vocabulary, etc). There will also be a performance in week 8 to show the student's growing understanding of Samantha and her time period.
Copies of all six of Samantha's original books OR the two Beforever Versions --> Manners and Mischief and Lost and Found. Listening to audio versions of the novels is absolutely fine as well! For the tin can telephones: twine, two empty tin cans of equal size (**use a hammer and nail to make a hole in the middle of each can prior to class**), paint or spray paint For the paper snowflakes: Paper, scissors For the ice cream snowballs: 1 quart of vanilla ice cream, 2 cups of shredded coconut, 12 ladyfinger cookies, measuring cups, shallow bowl, ice cream scoop, 2 large spoons, freezer container with lid. For the play: Supplies will depend on the role, but will be discussed well in advance.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Samantha's parents pass away prior to the start of the novels, and it is mentioned throughout the story. This will be discussed in an age-appropriate manner only as it pertains to the plot.
