This Amelia Bedelia Book Club is for students who love reading and want to share their love of reading with others through projects, discussions, and activities. The goal of this class is to help students develop comprehension skills, writing, vocabulary, figurative language and work on higher level thinking skills. Each week, learners will read an Amelia Bedelia chapter book by Herman Parish. These books will need to be purchased or borrowed from the library to complete the class. Learners will choose from a variety of weekly activities on a Reading Choice Board to practice comprehension and vocabulary skills. We will not meet face-to-face in this class, but instead learners will show what they learned with hands-on projects. What will we be reading? 1 - Amelia Bedelia Means Business 2 - Amelia Bedelia Unleashed 3 - Amelia Bedelia Road Trip 4- Amelia Bedelia Goes Wild 5 - Amelia Bedelia Shapes Up Why choose a self-paced course? Learners will get to choose activities that they enjoy that reflects their own interests and abilities while being encouraged to read or listen to a chapter book each week. Learners may take all the time they need to work on the activities. This class lends itself to challenging advanced learners by having them complete more than three weekly activities or helping neurodiverse learners in completing an appropriate number of reading assignments at their own pace. How will my learner participate? In this book study, each week students will post a video or discussion post to describe their favorite part of the book. Each week, students will choose from three different reading activities out of six total options--the Reading Choice Board. Reading activities range from: drawing a new cover, creating Google slides, acting out your favorite part of the book and recording a video of yourself, completing a comprehension worksheet, doing a writing craft, creating Google Slides, making a comic strip, using a dictionary to look up new vocabulary words and write sentences, etc. Each week your child will be given a new list of comprehension activities that could include writing assignments, crafts, drawings and videos to make the class fun and engaging for learners of many different reading levels! Every lesson, you will have access to a video of me introducing the book, telling my favorite part and explaining the reading choice board. Student choice is incredibly important to me as a teacher, and I believe students do best when they get to choose activities that they feel they will succeed in, while simultaneously challenging them to get out of their comfort zone and try something new! The teacher and students will check-in as needed to promote discussion, ask and answer questions and provide feedback. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of figurative language, reading comprehension and vocabulary through reading assignments and collaborating with students and teacher.
