In this ongoing book club, students will read an Amelia Bedelia book and we will discuss it in class and work on reading comprehension through fun, engaging activities.

Book clubs and chapter book studies are a great way to get your learner involved in reading comprehension and get excited about literacy. In this weekly, ongoing class, we will discuss the chapter book Amelia Bedelia story that is read (or listened to!) at home. We will take turns engaging in fun discussion about all the silly things Amelia Bedelia did in the story. We will discuss story elements such as characters, setting etc. We will also learn about the figurative language of idioms...
Students will work on comprehension skills through discussion and questioning. Students will be able to understand the plot, setting and major and minor characters in the story. Students will show understanding of literal and figurative meanings through a graphic organizer. Students will make predictions based on the character's actions thoughts and feelings. Students will make connections to their own life and experiences.
I am a certified elementary teacher and have taught phonics, reading, writing and math for many years. Before teaching 2nd grade, I tutored students in reading comprehension, decoding words, math and science after school and during the summer. I was also a Title 1 reading intervention specialist for grades kindergarten-3rd grade focusing on reading fluency and comprehension strategies. I have worked in a preschool and pre-k setting as well working on a variety of literacy skills.
