US Grade 3 - 8
Beginner - Advanced Level
The AMC 8 Competition will be on Jan. 22 - 28, 2025. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute competition for students in grade 8 and below. The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course. The AMC 8 is a standalone competition that introduces students to a different kind of mathematical problem-solving than is usually seen in school curricula. Students who enjoy the AMC 8 could go on to try the AMC 10/12. Each tutoring session will have a basic, medium, and hard question from a previous AMC 8 competition. We will have fun as we solve problems together and mix in games as well. We will cover problems in counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables, linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course. Between sessions, I will assign some past AMC 8 Math problems to practice so that we can go over any questions on them in the next tutoring session.
Learning Goals
Students will practice past AMC 8 competition problems in the areas of counting and probability, estimation, and proportional reasoning.
Students will practice past AMC 8 competition problems in the areas of elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem and spatial visualization.

Parental Guidance
I welcome working together with the parent and consider them part of the team to help the student as best as we can!
Pre-Requisites
The AMC 8 is a challenging test so student should have a good understanding of their Math in school before trying to do advanced questions from the AMC 8. I would be willing to help them get to this level.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello everyone!
My name is Jay Grasso and I love helping kids succeed in Math! I have 15 years of experience as a certified Middle and High School Math Teacher in Massachusetts and remotely. Two years ago, my wife and I moved to Hawaii and last year I taught as a Math Intervention teacher for Catapult Learning at a school in Honolulu.
My favorite story is how I was able to help a junior in High School who had failed Algebra 2 Honors Math in the third quarter. It turns out he did not like his teacher and had given up. I was able to empathize with him and help him to focus on what he could control: his own behavior and doing well in Math. It was very rewarding for me to see him turn things around and get a B in the final quarter!
I also helped him to prepare for the SAT Math test he took once school ended. I gave him questions to try that were from previous SAT tests. This helped him review areas he had forgotten and build his confidence for the test. I hope to pass on to other students the insights that I've gained from going through several Math SAT questions.
I really believe that students need to unlearn worrying and stressing over Math and then apply themselves to fixing their weak areas. But some Math Teachers are not able to help a student reverse course. I help students with this by getting them to have some fun while learning Math.
