Class Experience

Starport is a roleplaying game designed by Kevin Ferrone (2019, Wider Path) to facilitate growth in problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, reading, writing, oral communications, mathematics, and self-esteem. In this class, each learner will assume the role of a character he or she creates and work with the other players to solve situations and problems - now officially endorsed by the creator!

Adventures from Amazing Tales by Martin Lloyd (www.amazing-tales.net) are also incorporated to provide learners a wide variety of quests in Starport's forests, kingdoms, pirate seas, and space. It is the students themselves who directs these sessions, describing how their character will respond to the story, place, or situation as detailed by the Guide (teacher). By using teamwork, players will problem solve their way through such quests as locating fairies for the queen and retrieving rare ingredients for shopkeepers. All this while exploring the fantasy world of Starport itself, where unicorns walk alongside robots, and players can imagine their way through forests, stores, and kingdoms.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Janie. I am a graduate of Charleston Southern University with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and History, and was certificated in Elementary, Early Childhood, and Early Childhood Special Education. As a member of Learning for Justice, I am up-to-date on current issues and best teaching practices in order to align my classroom to inform accurate details in a fun learning environment where children and youth feel respected, valued and welcome participants. In my 15-year career, I have worked with children aged one to ten. I believe that children do not care what you know until they know that you care, and that real learning occurs somewhere between laughter, smiles and mess.

The goal in my sessions is to engage students in topics of their interest through discussion, storytelling, and creativity to encourage authentic learning of the material and an appreciation of others. Questions and comments as well as topic-related pictures, items, and other creative means are always welcome. I LOVE to crochet and I have a passion for Science-Fiction/Fantasy, history and all things Warrior Cats.
