US Grade 10 - 12
Mary Wollstonecraft has been called the first feminist. This eighteenth-century woman became a champion of women's rights with her book A Vindication on the Rights of Woman. In this work, she promoted the idea that women are equal to men, are as intelligent as men, and deserve to have an education. In this class, we will discuss the life and legacy of Mary Wollstonecraft. We will discuss her ideas that were so radical in her time. We will also discuss her marriage to William Godwin - a marriage which made her the mother of another amazing author, Mary Shelley. We will also think critically about how Mary Wollstonecraft's bravery affects us today. I will teach this class via a PowerPoint presentation that includes the history of Mary Wollstonecraft, through references to her work A Vindication on the Rights of Woman, and through class discussion. I believe students learn best when they take ownership of their studies via discussion and when they enjoy what they are learning. This will be an interactive class in that students will discuss with me and with one another this amazing author and remarkable pioneer of women's rights. Students are encouraged to read or listen to A Vindication on the Rights of Woman prior to class in order to get the most out of our time together in class. This book is in the public domain and can easily be found online.
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate through discussion their understanding of the role Mary Wollstonecraft played in women's rights and their understanding of her own history and contribution to literature.
