*In a small class setting, we will learn to identify two alphabet letters for each class meeting while also considering each letter's sound. *We will use materials to practice the letter shapes before actually practicing our handwriting in class. The materials we use can be modeling clay, yarn, string, ribbon, or even a shoelace! There are no specifics to the material we use to form our letters. This will simply be a fun activity to encourage identifying the letter, while also considering it's sound. *This ongoing course will practice two specific letter sounds each week before cycling back through the alphabet. Interactive activities will enhance our learning experience! *This course is designed for students who who are ready to identify the alphabet letters in their uppercase and lowercase forms, how the letters are formed, the sounds each letter makes, and simple practice with handwriting of each letter. *Feel free to drop into any class throughout the cycle as we will cycle back through the alphabet many times! **Additionally, this class is also appropriate for ESL learners! Any student desiring to learn to read English will first benefit from focusing on the letter sounds :) *Class participation is encouraged but is not required. Each learner can be as involved as much as he/she would like. My goal is to encourage engagement through activities and movement in an energetic and fun atmosphere. *I believe that when students are having fun, they learn the most! *Handouts will be provided before class to practice handwriting and to begin thinking about words that begin with our target letters of the week. *No prior knowledge is required. Students may enroll at any time. *First cycle: We will focus on 2 letters for each class session. Third cycle (current): Week of September 22 letters A, B Week of September 29 letters C, D Week of October 6 letters E, F Week of October 13 letters G, H
Learning Goals
The goal of this on-going course is for students to become more familiar with letter sounds. By focusing on specific letters in each class through show 'n tell, handwriting, physical movement, and engaging activities, students will begin an important first step in reading!
