Welcome to Alphabet Chef, self-paced edition! In this interactive, alphabet-themed cooking class, young learners will have fun making a delicious breakfast, snack, lunch, or dessert! This is a flexible class, to give you the ability to fit it into your busy schedule, pause as needed, and replay videos as many times as you'd like. If your child shares pictures, videos, or comments about their work, I will provide personal feedback on learners’ posts.

Each letter introduction, song/chant, and recipe will be provided via prerecorded video. That way, learners and their families can log on when it best suits them to participate. I will also provide alternate ideas and "twists" on recipes, so you can try them in different ways through the week.

This class encourages letter-sound knowledge and practice while also providing movement and music based practice, while also introducing the basics of kitchen safety and cooking. Family participation is welcome, as cooking together is a wonderful way to bond with your children!

Recipe cards, including ingredient lists, will be provided with accompanying videos. Fancy kitchen equipment and experience are not necessary. Recipes will be kid-friendly without too many complicated ingredients, but young learners will still need some assistance. Recipes will also be able to be altered to meet dietary restrictions as needed.

In each video, I will introduce the letter of the alphabet we are focusing on. Learners will participate in a fun activity, game, or song about the focus letter and will practice "sky writing" the capital and lowercase of the letter in the air (feel free to have them really write them, too!). Then, we will prep, create, and taste our treats! The time required to prepare the recipes each week may vary slightly, depending on ingredients and your learner's ability level. This is a great way to encourage your child to try different foods and flavors they may not otherwise be interested in!

I invite all learners to share pictures of themselves preparing the treats and their finished products. I also invite them to share items they found that begin with the focus letter, or a glimpse of them practicing the song/activity. I will provide personalized feedback throughout the week to each and every learner via video and chat/discussion in the classroom.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Recipes will be fairly simple and kid-friendly, but some parental guidance may still be necessary, and more for younger students. Parents should always provide supervision and guidance when an appliance or some kitchen utensils are used. It is also recommended that a clean, reachable workstation be set up for your learner, whether at a table or counter space.
Supply List
Ingredient lists and recipe cards will be sent with classroom posts. Ingredients and tools will be common items you may already have. I suggest an apron or covering, or wearing clothes that are okay to get a bit messy!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! I am Ms. Katie. I teach classes of different interests and topics for young learners. I have a passion for this age group and love to interact with my students in fun and engaging ways!

I believe that learning should be FUN and that even our youngest learners should have the opportunity to express themselves while developing and following their own interests. I strive to make my classroom a safe, engaging space where all learners feel comfortable doing so. I also believe in tailoring learning to a student's development, interests, and abilities. I have enjoyed the freedom to provide such educational experiences to my own children whom I homeschool, and love doing the same for my learners now on Outschool!

I have taught in a variety of settings and environments for the last 13 years. I have been a teacher for over 10 years. I spent 9 years in the public education system as a classroom teacher, 3 in 3rd grade and 6 in Kindergarten. I taught the entire 2020-21 school year virtually, to 50 Kindergarten students! I have years of experience in learning support, gifted support, autism support, emotional support. I have also helped to run an outdoor, nature-centered camp for children ages 4-14. I served as an Envirothon coach for grades 3 and 4, and helped to start and run a "Storybook STEM" club for elementary aged children. I have my Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and my Master's Degree in Education. I am also a Google Certified Educator.

On a personal note, I love being outside, hiking, reading, traveling, baking, and being a mom to my own 3 young children who also love to take classes on Outschool.
